Scholarships and funding at Carnegie Mellon University

Carnegie Mellon funds its graduate students primarily through its departments. Doctoral offers in most programs come with a funding package built from research assistantships, teaching assistantships and internal fellowships, decided at admission, while professional and master's programs carry their own scholarships and are often only partially funded. The practical question for a PhD applicant is therefore about the department's funding model, not about a separate CMU-wide competition.

This page also carries a long list of national and society fellowships, because CMU curates external opportunities for its students the way many US universities do. Those awards, including the Truman, GEM and Coverdell programs visible below, are applied for directly with the outside body, and CMU's role is nomination and support, so the provider line on a card tells you which application track you are really on.

International undergraduates at CMU meet need-based and merit aid that is decided as part of admission, with need-based aid limited for students from abroad. Use the funding type and provider on each card to sort the university awards from the external ones, and check the official link for the current round, since external fellowships set their own deadlines that have nothing to do with CMU's academic calendar.
