Fully Funded Scholarships for African Students 2026

African students are eligible for some of the largest scholarship programmes in the world, led by the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program. Whether you are aiming for a bachelor's in the US or a PhD in Europe, funding exists for every level.
1. MasterCard Foundation Scholarship Program for Africans. The main award funds undergraduate and graduate study at partner universities in Africa and abroad, covering tuition, accommodation and living costs for academically strong students with a record of community leadership.
2. Nigerian Federal Government Scholarship (BEA). The Bilateral Education Agreement scholarship sends Nigerian students abroad for undergraduate and postgraduate study with full funding.
3. Commonwealth Scholarships. Fully funded master's and PhD study in the UK for students from Commonwealth countries across Africa.
4. Postgraduate Kenya Scholarship at the University of Stirling. A dedicated postgraduate award for Kenyan students in Scotland.
5. Postgraduate Ghana Scholarship at the University of Stirling. The same programme for Ghanaian applicants.
6. Ghana Scholarships Authority. The national body that administers local and foreign scholarships for Ghanaian students.
7. DAAD Scholarships. Fully funded study in Germany for development-related courses, open to students from across Africa.
The Mastercard Foundation and Commonwealth awards are the most competitive and need a strong application months ahead of the deadline. Country-specific awards like the Nigeria BEA run through your home government, so watch the official announcements rather than third-party listings. Verify every deadline on the provider's website before applying.
Eligibility is the first filter, and it is rarely continental. The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program runs at a defined list of partner universities rather than everywhere, and each partner admits its own cohort. Commonwealth Scholarships are open to Commonwealth countries only, which excludes several African states. The Chinese Government Scholarship runs a bilateral route that depends on your government's agreement with China. Check your country against each scheme rather than against the continent.
Language changes the list more than applicants expect. Programmes in France, Belgium and parts of Canada are taught in French, and Francophone applicants often have a wider choice than the English-language lists suggest. Turkish, German and Chinese government schemes also run separate tracks for French speakers.
The nomination question decides the timeline. Where a ministry, embassy or university has to put your file forward, that body sets an earlier closing date, sometimes months earlier. Applying to the international deadline without a nomination is the most common way a strong file is never read.
Two cautionary notes. Application fees charged by intermediaries are not part of any government scheme, and no legitimate scholarship asks you to pay for consideration. And a scholarship that covers tuition but not living costs is not full funding, however it is advertised, so compare the stipend with rent in the city involved.
