Study in Canada: Top Scholarships for International Students

Canadian funding is mostly university funding. There are a few national awards, but most international students who are funded are funded by the institution they attend, through entrance scholarships, departmental awards, research assistantships or a supervisor's grant. That shapes the search: pick the department first, then ask what it offers.

The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships are the best known national award, and they are for doctoral study. They are awarded through the university, which nominates candidates, so the application is internal before it is national: you apply to the university, the university ranks you, and only then does your file reach the national competition. A supervisor who supports your nomination matters more than the form.

The Lester B. Pearson International Scholarship is the best known undergraduate award, and it is specific to the University of Toronto. It requires a nomination from your school, covers tuition, books, incidentals and residence for four years, and admits a small number of students each year. Other universities run their own equivalents, usually with less publicity and better odds.

At master's level, funding is thinner and more departmental. Course-based master's degrees are usually unfunded, since they are taught rather than research-based, while thesis-based master's degrees can come with a stipend from a supervisor's grant or a teaching assistantship. If funding matters, apply to thesis programmes and contact supervisors before applying.

Provincial and university awards fill the rest: entrance scholarships for international students, faculty-specific awards, and donor-funded bursaries that are often under-subscribed because nobody reads the eligibility list. These are worth an hour of searching on the university's own awards page, and each one has its own deadline.

Cost is the other half of the calculation. International tuition in Canada is high, and the study permit requires proof of funds for tuition plus living costs. A scholarship that covers tuition but not living costs still leaves a real gap, so compare the total package rather than the headline.

The study permit process runs in parallel with admission and is not automatic. It requires an acceptance letter, proof of funds, a medical examination in some cases, and biometrics, and it takes weeks. A scholarship letter helps but does not replace the financial documents.

If you are starting, choose three universities with the department you want, check their international awards page, email one potential supervisor per department, and apply to the awards you are eligible for in the same window. Canadian deadlines cluster between December and February for a September start.
